Proper Usage Of Chemical Additives With Cement

The use of concrete additives has become an essential part of the production of concrete and the products are added during the concrete preparation process, in an amount not greater than 5% of the cementitious mass contained in the concrete, in order to modify the properties in the mixture between cement, gravel, sand and water, in order to improve the characteristics and some of its properties both in the fresh and in the hardened state. The objectives of this process are to slow down or speed up the setting time; provide greater fluidity to the mixture; provide increased resistance; increase the capacity of the concrete.

Chemical additives for Portland cement concrete – Part 1: Requirements specifies the requirements for chemical additives for Portland cement concretes. This standard (all parts) applies to chemical additives intended for reinforced or non-reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete, which can be prepared in a concrete plant, prefabricated plants or dosed on site. This standard (all parts) also applies to chemical additives for extruded and vibro-pressed concrete.

Chemical additives for Portland cement concrete – Part 2: Performance tests establishes test procedures for comparative evaluation of the performance of the additives. This part is applicable to the comparison of additives from the same source and also additives from different manufacturers. NBR 11768-3 of 10/2019 – Chemical additives for Portland cement concrete – Part 3: Characterization tests specify the reference test methods for determining pH, solids content, specific mass, chloride content and infrared analysis . This part is applicable to the characterization of additives and can be applied to check the uniformity of a batch or different batches of solid or liquid additives from the same source.
